What it means
A proxy did not get a timely response from the server downstream of it. Similar to 408, but reported from the proxy's point of view about the next hop.
SIP/2.0 504 Server Time-out
Common causes
- The downstream server is unreachable or very slow
- A far hop is not responding within the proxy's timer
How to fix it
- Check reachability and health of the downstream server
- Look for network delay or loss on the path to the next hop
- Review timer settings if the far end is simply slow
